I was very disappointed in this book. Wanting to know more about Christina Rossetti, in particular (but also interested in her artist/writer brother, Dante Gabriel Rossetti), I had hopes this would be an enlightening book about the family. Sometimes the books published closer to the actual time period of the subjects of the biography have a keener insight into the individuals. Sadly, I found this to be ponderous, over-explanatory and even dull droning on and on concerning pre-Rafaelitism, and a difficult read to stick with. I found it to be less of a dual biography (actually 3/4 of the book is about Dante Gabriel and less than 1/4 about Christina Rossetti), than an attempted critique of the art and writings of the subjects. Indeed, particularly concerning Christina, the emphasis is more on the poetry and an attempted explanation/evaluation than that of her life and delving into the kind of amazing intelligence that produced such works as Goblin's Market.

I have ordered a couple of other biographies of Christina Rossetti, and have hope they will be far more interesting. I realize this is a reprint of a book published in 1923; nevertheless the writing, editing/punctuation and presentation leaves a lot to be desired. Such a pity. This Rossetti brother and sister in particular are both most fascinating folks; the book is, unfortunately, almost lifeless at times. There is comparatively little literature concerning Christina Rossetti available so far--perhaps the other biographies available will be more detailed and enlightening.
